AI researcher and artist based in San Francisco.
👋 I’m Dave. Welcome to my site. The current iteration is focused on art, but I plan to include more academic research in the future.
Research. I read Neuroscience at Oxford University as a Marie Curie Fellow, and Computational and Mathematical Engineering at Stanford University as a Teaching Fellow with support from Nvidia. My current research at BAIR is on dimensionality reduction and representations of sequential information found in medicine, audio, and sensors. I wrote about art and the human brain for the journal Nature and taught courses at Stanford on algorithmic art and data visualization. In industry, I derived and built the AI delivery system for Caviar, which sold to Square for $100M, and led a fantastic engineering team through building a medical device (Bluue Co.), which is currently undergoing clinical trials.
Art. I naturally attend to shadows and find beauty in the richness of dark textures. My photos are usually spontaneous attempts to capture scenes with interesting shadows. Although sharing my visual experiences with others has been incredibly rewarding, I don’t profit from my photos, take on paid projects, or use my photos for promotional purposes. I also paint with acrylics and make algorithmic art, and I’m currently compiling a portfolio for this site.
About me. My mom was a fashion designer and my dad was a self-taught engineer. I’m a little bit of both. I grew up in LA and love to surf. Thanks for checking out my site. If you’d like to reach out, my email is in this math paper.
